Gestión de los residuos sólidos del barrio 30 de Abril - cantón Francisco de Orellana

Abstract

This research was conducted on solid waste management in the 30 de Abril neighborhood of Francisco de Orellana Canton, Orellana Province. The research process was based on a baseline survey that allowed to know the conditions of solid waste management by the residents, using observation, interview and survey techniques. Subsequently, a simple random sampling was carried out for the qualitative and quantitative characterization of the waste from the homes, the Veloz clinic and the Jaime Gilbert Educational Unit, using plastic bags, scales and a notebook, and with the data obtained, an environmental impact assessment was carried out to identify the positive and negative impacts caused by the generation of solid waste, allowing the positive and negative effects to be remedied through the implementation of a selective collection system. Of the 81 samples collected for the characterization, the following results were obtained: at the household level, 69.60% are organic waste (82.86 kg/day), 13.43% belong to recyclable waste (15.98 kg/day) and 16.97% to non-recyclable waste. The per-capita production for households is 0.715Kg/inhab/day, the Jaime Gilbert educational unit has a per-capita production of 0.074Kg/student/day and the Veloz Clinic generates 0.336Kg/patient/day of hazardous waste. The management model indicates the implementation of a selective collection system on the established days and times, thus preventing a large amount of waste from reaching the landfill. It is recommended that the municipality of Francisco de Orellana implement the management model in all neighborhoods in the urban area of the city in order to strengthen the use of solid waste.
