Abstract

In chicken raising, one of the main problems, whether in small or large scale, is the indiscriminate use of commercial additives, which alter the metabolism of the birds, bringing with it problems in the digestive tract of the animal, causing problems in the maintenance, growth and production of the animal. The objective of the research was to evaluate the morphometry of the accessory organs of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) in free-range chickens fed turmeric (Curcuma longa). In order to promote the use of natural additives, due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Forty 70-day-old free-range chickens were used in the slaughter phase, where 4 treatments were used: Control (100% balanced + 0% turmeric meal), T1 (99% balanced + 1% turmeric meal), T2 (98% balanced + 2% turmeric meal) and control T3 (97% balanced + 3% turmeric meal). For data collection, a calibrator, a flexometer and an analytical balance were used. T1 had similar averages with respect to the minimum measurements of each organ of the TGI, compared to the control group. However, when comparing the weight, length, and diameter of each organ of T3 with the Control group, there was a great variety, especially with the weight of the liver, which is a fundamental organ in the metabolism of the birds. In conclusion, the 2 and 3% of turmeric in the diet of free-range chickens had a lower morphometric development in the organs of these birds, at the same time there were no greater weight gains, feed conversion and, therefore, there were problems in their growth and production.
