Caracterización fenotipica del ganado charolais en el rancho Don Bosco – Morona Santiago.

Abstract

The aim of this research was the phenotypic characterization of Charolais cattle in their different categories in the Don Bosco ranch - Morona Santiago. The research was field research and was developed in the ranch, located in the Morona canton, for which 95 Charolais cattle of different ages were used, in which 11 morphological measures were evaluated, in addition to body condition, using descriptive statistical analysis with Tukey's test. At the end of the study, it was found that there were no statistically significant differences between the categories and between the variables measured; however, there were numerical differences, being the "reproductive" category the one with the best numerical indexes in most of the morphological measurements, with respect to weight (645 kg), total length (173 cm), height at the withers (132 cm), depth (67 cm), strength (52 cm), body condition (7), thoracic perimeter (194 cm), abdominal perimeter (226 cm), and front and rear shank perimeter (26.50 and 30 cm), respectively, in comparison with the other categories. On the other hand, the one that presented the best numerical values with respect to chest height was the category, rising males with 54.90 cm, with respect to age, the oldest category present in the establishment was the cows with an average of 233.92 months. It is concluded that the phenotypic characteristics of the Charolais cattle raised at Rancho Don Bosco, present a high similarity with values to the national and international standard of the breed. Considering the results, it is recommended to continue with scientific and technical evaluations of the Charolais breed in the area.
